Do listicles help you get recommended by ChatGPT?
Do listicles help you get recommended by ChatGPT? See why AI tools cite ranked lists, how to choose the right ones, and the risks to manage.
Yes, listicles help, and for recommendation questions they are one of the strongest signals available. If you are working out how to get recommended by ChatGPT, start with the ranked lists it already cites. A place on those lists is often the shortest route into its answers.
The catch is that only some lists count. A listicle that AI tools never read adds little, and a poorly chosen one can add risk.
This article explains why the format works, how to choose lists, and what can go wrong. Our example is a campaign of 7 listicle placements and 3 link insertions.
Why ChatGPT leans on listicles
When a buyer asks ChatGPT for “the best” tool or supplier, it searches the web and summarises what it finds. Ranked lists match that question closely. They name several options, compare them on the same points, and give a short reason for each.
Two recent studies show how strong the pattern is.
| Study | What it measured | Finding |
|---|---|---|
| Evertune, via Search Engine Land (sponsored) | About 25,000 of the most-cited URLs across six AI tools, March and April | Half of the URLs were listicles; 63% of all citations pointed to listicles |
| Evertune, via Search Engine Land (sponsored) | Types of listicle cited | Ranked lists made up 71% to 86% of listicles, depending on the AI tool |
| Peec | Over 1 million AI citations, February 2026 | 52% of listicles cited by ChatGPT were cited more than twice per answer |
Peec also explains the reason. Its research on why listicles get cited found that “best” is the word ChatGPT adds most often to its hidden searches. Listicles are built around that word, so they match the searches ChatGPT runs on the buyer’s behalf.

What listicle link building means
Listicle link building is the work of earning a place, with a link, on ranked roundup articles in your market. Typical titles are “best project management software” or “top industrial heating suppliers”. The aim is to be named where buyers and AI tools both look.
There are two common forms. A listicle placement adds your brand as an entry in a ranked list. A link insertion adds a mention and link to an existing article that already ranks or is already cited.
Listicle link building differs from general guest posting. A guest post is a new article that may never rank or be read by AI tools. A listicle placement joins a page that already has an audience and, if chosen well, a record of AI citations.
Campaign evidence: 7 listicles and 3 link insertions
The client was a digital wellness app with more than one million installs. Between 1 April and 30 June 2026, we secured 10 placements: 7 listicle entries and 3 link insertions. All figures below are from Ahrefs.
| Measure (Ahrefs) | Start (March 2026) | End (June 2026) | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI citations per month | 10 | 151 | 15x |
| Referring domains | 140 | 465 | 3.3x |
| Domain rating | 27 | 39 | +12 points |
The placement sites averaged a domain rating of 68, ranging from 43 to 91. More telling is what they already had: 16,099 AI citations between them before the campaign began. The full results are on our case study page.
The table below shows the ten sites, without names, ordered by AI citations at the time of placement. It shows why organic traffic alone is a weak guide when choosing lists.
| Site | Domain rating | Organic traffic per month | AI citations |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 91 | 90,600 | 6,279 |
| B | 66 | 69,800 | 3,489 |
| C | 62 | 225,000 | 2,188 |
| D | 66 | 9,000 | 1,772 |
| E | 70 | 1,700 | 887 |
| F | 79 | 2,200 | 561 |
| G | 64 | 1,800 | 377 |
| H | 74 | 9,700 | 217 |
| I | 68 | 1,700 | 171 |
| J | 43 | 286 | 158 |
Site C had the most traffic by far, but site D had close to as many AI citations with 4% of the traffic. Site E had 1,700 visits a month and 887 citations. A list chosen on traffic alone would have missed several of the sites that AI tools read most.

How to get recommended by ChatGPT with the right lists
Most of the result comes from choosing the right lists. We check every candidate against the same criteria before any outreach starts.
| Criterion | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Existing AI citations | How often AI tools cite the site, from a tool such as Ahrefs | Shows whether AI tools already read and trust the page |
| Topic fit | Whether your product belongs naturally on the list | AI tools match lists to the question asked |
| Real organic traffic | Search traffic backed by real rankings | Confirms the authority figures are genuine |
| Domain rating | The strength of the site’s link profile | A guide to authority, not a deciding factor |
| Editorial quality | Clear criteria, accurate descriptions, recent updates | Weak lists may lose citations over time |
| Prompt match | Whether the list appears when you run your buyers’ prompts | The most direct sign the list shapes answers |
Start from the prompts, not from a list of websites. Run the questions your buyers ask in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, and record which lists appear. Those lists are your first targets.
Then pace the placements. In our example, placements went live in every month of the quarter, not in one batch. A steady pace gives AI tools time to recrawl each page and keeps the growth of the link profile even.
What a good listicle entry contains
A placement only helps if the entry gives AI tools something clear to repeat. A vague entry with a link and one line of praise is easy to overlook.
A strong entry usually includes:
- A plain description of what the product does and who it is for, in one or two sentences.
- Specific facts such as main features, supported platforms, pricing model or industries served.
- A clear reason to choose it that matches the list’s topic, for example “best for large engineering teams”.
- A link to the most relevant page, such as a product or use case page, not always the homepage.
Keep these facts the same as on your own site. When AI tools find the same description in several trusted places, they are more likely to repeat it accurately.
The risks of listicle placements
Listicles work, but they carry risks that an enterprise brand should weigh before it starts.
Low-quality list sites. Some sites publish many thin “best of” lists to sell entries. These rarely earn AI citations and can harm how your brand is seen. Checking AI citations and editorial quality filters most of them out.
Changes in AI tools. AI tools change how they choose sources. Peec reports that a ChatGPT model update in August 2026 moved some retrieval from listicles towards brand product pages. A plan built only on listicles depends on one pattern holding.
Brand accuracy. You do not control how a list describes you, or which competitors sit beside you. Provide accurate product facts, and check each placement once it goes live.
How to tell whether listicles are working
Listicle placements should be judged on what follows them, not on the number secured. We track four measures each month for every campaign.
- AI citations by platform. Count how often your brand is cited in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, using a tool such as Ahrefs.
- Prompt checks. Run the same set of buyer prompts each month and record whether your brand is named, and in what position.
- Referral sessions. Use Google Analytics to count visits from AI tools and from the list pages themselves.
- Authority figures. Track referring domains and domain rating, which support visibility in both search and AI answers.
Compare each month’s figures with the dates placements went live. In our example, citations dipped in May while Google AI Overviews and Gemini reassessed sources. The May placements then showed fully in the June figures, so one month’s data should not decide the plan.
Where listicles fit in a wider plan
Listicles work best as one part of AI visibility work, not the whole of it. Your own product, comparison and use case pages also need to answer buyers’ questions clearly. If AI tools shift towards brand pages, those pages carry the load.
Enterprise B2B markets often have fewer ranked lists than consumer markets. In those cases, industry publications, analyst-style comparisons and digital PR coverage play a larger part. Our AI SEO service combines listicle placements with work on clients’ own pages for this reason.
Budget planning should reflect this balance. A listicle programme can show early movement in AI citations within a quarter, as our example did. Work on your own pages and digital PR coverage usually takes longer, but it does not depend on another publisher’s editorial choices.
We suggest reviewing the mix every quarter. Compare AI citations, referral sessions from AI tools and leads by source, and move budget to what is working.

Frequently asked questions
Are listicles the best way to get recommended by ChatGPT?
They are one of the strongest options for “best” and “top” questions. Studies show ranked lists receive a large share of AI citations. They work best alongside clear product and comparison pages on your own site.
What is the difference between a listicle placement and a link insertion?
A listicle placement adds your brand as an entry in a ranked list. A link insertion adds a mention and link to an existing article. Our example campaign used 7 of the first and 3 of the second.
How many listicle placements does a brand need?
There is no fixed number. In our example, 10 well-chosen placements were followed by a rise from 10 to 151 AI citations a month. Quality and AI citation history matter more than volume.
Should I choose lists by domain rating?
Domain rating is a useful guide but not enough on its own. Check how often AI tools already cite each site, and whether the list appears when you run your buyers’ prompts.
