How to get cited by ChatGPT: how one app went from 10 to 151 AI citations a month
Learn how to get cited by ChatGPT with a six-step method, and see how one app grew from 10 to 151 AI citations a month in three months.
If you want to know how to get cited by ChatGPT, the answer is simple: appear on the pages ChatGPT already reads and trusts. Earn mentions on ranked lists, reviews and guides in your market, keep your site open to OpenAI’s crawler, and measure citations monthly.
That is the method we used for a digital wellness app with more than one million installs. Between 1 April and 30 June 2026, its monthly AI citations rose from 10 to 151 (15x), according to Ahrefs. This article sets out the method step by step, with the campaign figures, so your team can judge whether it fits your own brand.
Why AI citations now matter to enterprise buyers
AI assistants have become part of how business buyers research suppliers. In the 6sense 2025 B2B Buyer Experience Report, 94% of buyers said they use large language models during their buying process. The same report found buyers first contact a seller about 61% of the way through their journey.
That timing matters for a long sales cycle.
The report also found that 94% of buyers rank their shortlist before they speak to a seller. The favourite at that point wins about 80% of the time. If your brand is missing from the answers buyers read during research, it may be missing from the shortlist.
The audience is large. TechCrunch reported in February 2026 that ChatGPT had reached 900 million weekly active users. A citation in a ChatGPT answer is now visibility that marketing leaders can track and report, just like a search ranking.
First, make sure AI tools can read your website. In our study of S&P 500 websites, 15 companies block at least one AI crawler and only 70 publish an llms.txt file. You can check your own site.
How ChatGPT chooses the sources it cites
OpenAI does not publish a ranking formula for ChatGPT, but it does publish the entry requirement. Its publishers and developers FAQ states that any public website can appear in ChatGPT search. Sites that block OAI-SearchBot are left out of summaries and snippets.
Beyond access, the best evidence comes from studies of which pages AI tools cite. Two findings are useful for planning.
First, AI answers lean heavily on ranked lists. Research by Evertune, published as sponsored content on Search Engine Land, looked at about 25,000 of the most-cited URLs across six AI tools, including ChatGPT. Half of those URLs were listicles, and 63% of all citations pointed to listicles.
Second, brand mentions across the web appear to matter more than raw link counts. An Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands measured how closely different factors track brand mentions in Google AI Overviews. The study covers Google’s AI feature, not ChatGPT, but the pattern is a useful guide.
| Factor (Ahrefs study, Google AI Overviews) | Correlation with AI Overview brand mentions |
|---|---|
| Branded web mentions | 0.664 |
| Branded anchors | 0.527 |
| Branded search volume | 0.392 |
| Domain rating | 0.326 |
| Referring domains | 0.295 |
| Number of backlinks | 0.218 |
Ahrefs stresses that correlation does not prove cause. Even so, the order is clear. Being named on many relevant pages tracks AI visibility more closely than the number of backlinks a site holds.
How to get cited by ChatGPT: the six-step method
This is the method we follow when a client asks how to rank in ChatGPT. Each step can be repeated on a new market or product line.
1. Check that AI crawlers can reach your site
Start with access, because nothing else works without it. Check your robots.txt file and your content delivery network settings to confirm that OAI-SearchBot is allowed. OpenAI’s FAQ also notes that ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links, so your analytics can separate that traffic.
2. List the questions your buyers ask
Write down the prompts a buyer would type when looking for a supplier like you. Most are comparison questions: “best tools for”, “top providers of”, “alternatives to”. Group them by product line and by the stage of the buying journey.
3. Find the pages AI tools already cite for those questions
Run each prompt in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, and record the pages they cite. A tool such as Ahrefs can show how often a website is cited across AI answers. This gives you a short list of the pages that already shape the answer in your category.
4. Earn a place on those pages
Contact the publishers of those lists, reviews and guides, and make a clear case for including your brand. Choose pages on topics close to your product, with real organic traffic and a record of being cited. One placement on a page that AI tools already read can do more than many links on pages they ignore.
5. Make your own pages easy to quote
AI tools quote pages that answer a question directly. Put a clear, factual answer near the top of each key page, use plain headings, and keep product facts consistent across your site. Comparison and use case pages help, because they match the questions in step 2.
6. Measure citations every month
Track citations by platform, alongside referring domains, domain rating and organic traffic. Review which placements were followed by new citations, and move effort towards the sources that work. AI tools change how they select sources, so a monthly review keeps the plan current.

Campaign example: from 10 to 151 AI citations a month
The client was a digital wellness app that helps iPhone users reduce screen time. People in this category choose apps from recommendation lists. The brand needed to appear when someone asked an AI assistant for the best screen time app.
We secured 10 placements over three months: 7 listicle entries and 3 links added to existing articles. The sites averaged a domain rating of 68, ranging from 43 to 91. Each site was chosen by first checking how often AI tools already cited it.
| Measure (Ahrefs) | Start (March 2026) | End (June 2026) | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI citations per month | 10 | 151 | 15x |
| Referring domains | 140 | 465 | 3.3x |
| Domain rating | 27 | 39 | +12 points |
| Organic traffic per month (estimate) | 226 | 566 | 2.5x |
Before the campaign, the chosen sites already had 16,099 AI citations between them, according to Ahrefs. Placing the app inside content that AI tools already read is what turned new links into new citations. The first placement went live on 8 April 2026.
Progress was not a straight line. In May, citations in Google AI Overviews and Gemini dipped for a short time while those systems reassessed their sources. The May placements showed fully in the June figures.

What the example shows, and its limits
Three points from this campaign apply to most brands:
- Placements were chosen by AI citations first and domain rating second.
- Placements went live in every month, not in one batch.
- Reporting tracked citations on each platform, not only search rankings.
There are limits. This was one brand in a consumer category with clear “best app” lists.
An enterprise brand in manufacturing or software may find fewer ranked lists in its market. It may need more work on its own comparison and use case pages.
No one can promise a set number of citations. OpenAI does not publish how ChatGPT ranks sources, and AI tools change their selection methods often. What a team can control is access, presence on trusted pages, and the quality of its own content.
Common mistakes that slow progress
Most teams that struggle with AI visibility make one of a small number of mistakes. Each one is easy to check.
- Blocking AI crawlers by accident. Security settings or a content delivery network can block OAI-SearchBot without the marketing team knowing. Check access before any other work.
- Choosing sites by domain rating alone. A high domain rating does not mean AI tools read the site. Check each site’s record of AI citations as well.
- Sending every link to the homepage. AI tools answer specific questions, so product, comparison and use case pages need their own mentions.
- Reporting only search rankings. If citations are not tracked, nobody can tell which placements worked. Add AI citations to the monthly report from the start.
A further mistake is treating AI visibility as a separate project from search. The same pages, the same placements and the same reporting serve both. Keeping them in one plan avoids duplicated work and mixed messages to publishers.
How to report AI citations to your leadership team
Leadership teams want a short set of figures that move in a clear direction. We suggest four, reported monthly on one page.
- AI citations by platform: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and others, from a tracking tool such as Ahrefs.
- Referral sessions from AI tools: from Google Analytics, using the utm_source=chatgpt.com parameter and referrer data.
- Search visibility: from Google Search Console, which Google says includes AI feature traffic in the Performance report under the Web search type.
- Leads and pipeline: from your customer relationship management system, so the board sees business results, not only visibility.
Our AI SEO service follows this reporting structure, with citations tracked alongside standard search figures.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get cited by ChatGPT?
It varies by market and starting point. In the campaign above, monthly citations rose from 10 to 151 over three months. Results depend on how quickly placements go live and how AI tools reassess sources.
Can you pay ChatGPT to cite your brand?
OpenAI’s publishers and developers FAQ does not describe any way to pay for or guarantee placement in ChatGPT search. Citations come from the pages ChatGPT finds and judges relevant.
Can blocking crawlers stop ChatGPT from citing my site?
Yes. OpenAI’s FAQ says sites that block OAI-SearchBot are left out of summaries and snippets in ChatGPT search. Check which crawlers your robots.txt allows before deciding.
Is getting cited by ChatGPT different from ranking in Google?
The two overlap. Both reward relevant content and mentions on trusted sites. ChatGPT relies more heavily on ranked lists and comparison pages when it answers recommendation questions.
How do I track ChatGPT citations?
Use an AI visibility tool such as Ahrefs to count citations by platform. Add Google Analytics data on referral sessions tagged utm_source=chatgpt.com, and review both monthly.
Do backlinks still matter for AI visibility?
Yes, but how they are earned matters more than how many. In the Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions tracked AI Overview visibility more closely than the number of backlinks.
